    Plaquenil and sulfasalazine

I've stopped Sulfa as I was experiencing a bad taste & smell, which may be caused by sulfa. After a while it wasn't as effective and I too was prescribed methotrexate alongside. I'm about to start MTX & am hoping that I wont have side effects with that! The side effects of the methotrexate for me were horrendous (chronic chest infections) and I'm now asthmatic as a result.

Sulfasalazine Azulfidine® is part of a class of medicines called sulfa drugs. It’s a mix of salicylate, which is the main ingredient in aspirin, and an antibiotic. Some people are allergic to all sulfa drugs, so they can’t take sulfasalazine Azulfidine®. Most people take two 500 mg tablets of sulfasalazine Azulfidine twice per day. Hi, I was diagnosed with RA and was put on sulfa, my rheumy tried adding mtx but i had awful side effects so am now on hydroxychloroquine and sulfa.this combination worked for anyone? just wondered how other people got on with it. May 28, 2016 I have been diagnosed with Limited Scleroderma. My choices are Methotrexate, Plaquenil or Sulfasalzine Azulfidine. I researched them and determined Plaquenil would be my last choice, although it was his first, because I already have lattice degeneration of the retina in both eyes and one of the potential side effects is retinal problems.

I had side effects from MTX, which largely wore off, but haven't had any problems with the Hydroxy or Sulpha. I refuse to take it now even if its my passport to biologic treatment. I started with MTX which worked, but not enough so the others were added in which has been better.

Any how he prescribed Plaquenil to help, which from what he told me and what I've read is a drug originally intended to prevent/treat maleria, but has shown success in auto immune diseases.
