Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water to at least 20 percent; chemically the drug is 2-4-7-Chloro-4-quinolylaminopentylethylamino ethanol sulfate 11. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets contain 200 mg hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg base, and are for oral administration. Guaifenesin is used to help clear mucus or phlegm pronounced flem from the chest when you have congestion from a cold or flu. It works by thinning the mucus or phlegm in the lungs. This medicine is available both over-the-counter OTC and with your doctor's prescription. Do not give any over-the-counter OTC.

The most serious adverse effects affect the eye, with dose-related retinopathy as a concern even after hydroxychloroquine use is discontinued. The most common adverse effects are a mild nausea and occasional stomach cramps with mild diarrhea.

  5. I am new to plaquenil and take 200mg twice a day. I have a cold now and wondered if anyone knows of any cold medicine that shouldn't be taken with it. I tried Robitussin and it seems to be fine. I haven't called my doc yet since the cold isn't too bad. Lise.

After being off the Plaquenil for a little more than 24 hours, the phlegm seems to have already started to subside, and is no longer as thick but I continue to cough up white phlegm, yet it is not as thick.

Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine Toxicity Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine belong to the quinolone family. Although their therapeutic and toxic doses differ, they are related drugs with similar clinical indications for use and similar manifestations of retinal toxicity.
