Kelley, Hi. Some people DO get an allergic rash from hydroxychloroquine = the generic form. I've read that fewer get it from Plaquenil = the name brand, so some rheumies presecribe it even though it's more expensive. Does the printout you got with your Rx mention the rash possibility? Have you spoken with your rheumie? I am on all sorts of meds including MTX and Hydroxy. I have recently developed an itchy rash which only affects my cheeks and eyebrows and haven't a clue what's causing it, so I hope you get some helpful replies that might help me too! I can't face the GP again, as I am sure I am one of the "heart-sink" patients! See your general practitioner when you can, and contact the rheumatologist, also when you can. They're hard to get sometimes. But unfortunately they're not miracle workers. However, stick with the Plaquenil if you can, as it is slow working, and you may yet have good results.

Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.

Over time, hydroxychloroquine may uncommonly have an adverse effect on the retina that can lead to permanent visual damage if not picked up. I have been on plaquenil for about 3 weeks and I am starting to get a itchy rash. It's pretty mild so far starting on my forearms and now on my chest a little and the rest of my arms. Has anyone else had this problem? Will it go away? I am going to call my doc tomorrow but just wanted someone's opinion. Thank you Plaquenil takes quite a long time to get to its peak effectiveness depending on what you read, anywhere from 3 months to a year. Unless you are having significant side effects, try to give it at least 6 months before you decide it doesn't work for you.

I'm scared shitless of the risk that I could start to have vision loss or go blind. I already wear glasses and had eye muscle surgeries as a child so my vision is something I'm paranoid over.31, female FWIW. The decision between disease and medication can be paralyzing.
