However, there is uncertainty about which drugs cause a significant enough immunosuppressant effect that they could decrease vaccine efficacy or increase risks with vaccination. This article presents current literature on the use of influenza, pneumococcal, and herpes zoster vaccines in adults taking disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) such as glucocorticoids, methotrexate, and biologics.

If you’re an adult age 50 or older, your doctor will likely recommend you receive a new vaccine — called Shingrix — to protect against shingles, a viral infection that can cause a painful rash. Shingrix was FDA-approved last fall; the CDC recommends that people age 50 and older get two doses between two and six months apart. Dec 01, 2010 In addition to any vaccine misunderstandings or a fear that they will worsen diseases, Dr. Bingham believes that a lack of familiarity with vaccine recommendations and a lack of communication between rheumatologists and primary care physicians also contribute to underutilization of vaccines in patients with autoimmune disease. During this session, Barry Brause, MD, Director of Infectious Diseases at Hospital for Special Surgery, presented a comprehensive overview and update on infectious disease prevention, especially with regard to people with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, or more commonly called lupus.

The immunosuppressed patient may be at an increased risk for vaccine-preventable diseases, negative consequences of vaccination with live vaccines, and reduced vaccine response. When considering vaccines for adults, a patient’s immune status is a critical component to both sides of the risk-benefit equation that pharmacists and patients weigh together when discussing treatment and prevention options.

Immune & Autoimmune - Lupus "Natural" alternative to Hi, Carole. When I started Plaquenil, my GI system was in an uproar. But it usually was anyway. I didn't realize, until I saw Dr. Wallace's book and found the stats, plus my rheumie telling me much the same, that many people with lupus something like 40% or more "present" with GI problems.
